Athelstan is a well established residential home situated in the heart of Bodmin. The local doctors surgeries, library and churches are all within close proximity. Athelstan offers a warm homely atmosphere with 40 bedrooms, 38 single rooms some with en suite facilities, and 2 rooms which can accommodate couples. Prospective residents are encouraged to bring in some of their personal belongings to help them feel more at home.

There are large communal spaces within the home with 4 lounges to choose from. Two of the lounges have conservatories attached providing a pleasant sunny place to sit and relax. Both conservatories lead out to our sensory patio garden. This is a pleasant and easily accessible area for residents and visitors to sit out and enjoy the summer sunshine.

Athelstan offers a variety of activities, including musical entertainment, weekly art groups, chair exercises and trips to local attractions. Staff will often take clients out on mystery trips, more often than not ending up at the local pub.

Mealtimes are a very important part of the day, times are flexible and relaxed. We offer a choice at all meal times and special diets are catered for. Fresh and local produce and ingredients are sourced wherever possible. Our chef is very accommodating should anyone have a special request. For a small charge families are welcome to stay for meals with their relatives.

Attached to the home is a very lively Day Club. Residents are encouraged to use the facilities where there is regular entertainment, bingo, weekly art and craft groups and, weather permitting, trips out in one of our 2 minibuses.

We are very proud of the training achievements of the staff at Athelstan, 80% of our permanent care staff have completed their NVQ Level 2 in Care and our Specialist Dementia Care Training levels 1 and 2. Within Cornwall Care staff qualifications are refreshed on a regular basis, with course updates and on the job training. We have a large number of staff who have worked at Athelstan for a significant amount of time and gaining this level of experience has given them a real sense of pride in the care they deliver.

We know that the cost of care really concerns people. Fees are established and discussed on an individual basis, a manager undertakes a comprehensive assessment of each residents’ individual needs. This assessment is then reviewed to ensure that clients are receiving the best possible care.

General Practitioners, opticians, dentists, chiropodists and aromatherapists attend the home on a regular basis. A hairdresser is available Monday to Friday and newspapers and magazines are delivered daily if required. There is also an on site shop selling sweets, toiletries, cards etc. available as and when required.

Athelstan also has a very active League of Friends who throughout the year raise extra funds for the benefit of residents. The emphasis is on having fun with monthly bingo evenings, sponsored bike rides, twice yearly wine and wisdom quizzes (the more wine the less wisdom), BBQs and fetes.
