Specialises in: Behavioural support, Learning disability, Physical disability

36 West Street provides support to six people with a learning disability and physical disabilities; these may be multiple complex disabilities including an enduring health condition and some behavioural support needs. The service is situated in the community of Wombwell, Barnsley, which forms part of the bustling infrastructure of South Yorkshire. It is in close proximity to local facilities, parks and recreation areas and easily accessible bus routes.

Creating a welcoming environment is key to the service, ensuring day to day home living is part of life, alongside recreation, education and socialising.  The service has established links with the local community and takes advantage of the facilities available. Everyone is encouraged to develop and experience a range of recreational activities and will be supported in doing this.  The service has four large ground floor bedrooms, with all the rooms fully accessible and specifically designed for people using a wheelchair; all bedrooms have ceiling tracking to make personal care dignified, safe and more comfortable.

On the first floor are two self-contained apartments, each with a bedroom, a lounge and a kitchen. We encourage people to bring their own belongings and to decorate their rooms in the style they prefer. In addition to the bedrooms there are a number of communal rooms including a lounge, a quiet room, a dining room and an assisted showering facility. These have been carefully designed to meet the needs of service users with a range of disabilities and incorporate special features such as height adjustable tables and work surfaces. There is also a special sensory room. These facilities enable people to develop skills and build independence. There is also a private garden with raised flowerbeds.
