There can be many types of care home, but the main two are known as Residential care home and Nursing care home.
What is a Residential Home? A care home providing residential care will provide personal care for the resident throughout the day and night. Residential care homes are ideal for an elderly person who needs some support but who has a level of independence and a certain ability to tend to their own needs.
What is a Nursing Home? A care home providing nursing care will provide accomodation and personal care but also provides qualified nursing 24 hours a day. Nursing care homes tend to be more expensive due to the additional cost of nursing care.
Some elderly care homes have beds registered as residential care and other beds registered as nursing care. In addition, many care homes will offer respite care, or specialist dementia care. All care homes should be registered and monitored by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Care Homes and Nursing Homes for the elderly very often welcome residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. Whether the person with dementia needs a residential care home or a nursing care home will depend on their level of dementia as well as any other illnesses or disabilities.
There are many care homes now which offer care exclusively to people with dementia, or have separate facilities for dementia care. These can often be purpose built units and are run by staff who have in-depth knowledge and training of caring and communicating with people in all stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia. . The facilities are secure and safe and may include dementia friendly signage or street paths to allow people to walk without coming to an end of a corridor or an obstruction.
The ethos of person centred care and respect for the individual should be evident in all care homes providing dementia care, with competent, specially-trained staff ensuring that each resident receives unique, dignified care irrespective of the illness.
If you or your carer feels in need of a break, respite care can be a good option. Respite care is a temporary stay in a care home for you or you and your carer, or the temporary employment of a professional carer to come into your home. Respite care can provide extra levels of care while you recover from an illness or a stay in hospital and can also be a an opportunity to get to know a particular care home, if you are thinking of moving into one in the future.
Respite Care in your own home: A care provider can be employed on a temporary basis to come to your home and take over the duties normally provided by your own carer. This means that you can continue your own routine in your own home.
Respite Care in a care home or nursing home: Many care homes keep rooms just for short-term care. You should make sure the care home has the facilities and staff with relevant experience to provide the support for your particular needs.
Short-term breaks: There are many voluntary organisations and charities as well as private holiday companies that can offer specialised short breaks for you and your carer. You and your carer for mayalso be eligible to receive vouchers from your local council for short-term breaks.
