Budget hits pensioners with '£8bn VAT bill', says Labour

The Guardian reports that Liam Byrne, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury is calling on the Lib Dems to get the government to defer a potential £8 billion VAT bill, so that the impact of these VAT rises can be looked into properly and a plan can be put in place to compensate pensioners. However, these calls have so far only generated limited support from a few of the Lib Dem backbenchers.
