The Shieling supports 11 people with learning disabilities and complex needs. We aim to provide a safe and homely environment, where everyone can make their own choices about the support they receive. We do everything we can to improve the health and wellbeing of the people we support and as a team we are focused on building positive outcomes for everyone.

What It's Like to Live Here

Leisure activities are a strong feature of The Shieling and everyone is encouraged to discuss their particular interests with staff so we are able to support them to participate whenever possible. People enjoy activities such as swimming, shopping, going out for meals, watching football and rugby matches, going to concerts, socialising in pubs, bowling and going on trips to places of interest.

During the week people attend daytime activities outside of the house. These include computer sessions, gardening, arts and crafts and woodwork. At The Shieling people also enjoy going on walks and developing skills such as cooking, doing laundry and ironing.

Surroundings

The Shieling is a 15 minute walk away from the main town and the local transport link is a short walk from the house, along with local shops. The service is opposite a park with a cafe and other facilities. There is a local college and many other amenities nearby, including a swimming pool, a library and a bowling alley.

Service Facilities

The house is a large Victorian property, which is set over 4 floors and has large communal areas. It is situated on a quiet street overlooking the pine woods, which are part of the famous Valley Gardens.

There is a patio area to the front and rear of the house, with tables and chairs for relaxation and we have BBQs in the summer months.

Everyone is encouraged to personalise their bedrooms, to make it as homely as possible.

People are supported and encouraged to be part of meal preparations and all dietary requirements can be met.
