What it's like to live here

Staff support resident in gaining supported employment and one resident has a 'full time paid employment' we support residents in accessing local transport to travel to and from work.

Staff encourage and support all resident to have their own hobbies and interests. Planning for days out and individual day activities are arranged at the home with the key worker or during Your Voice meetings.

Friends and families are invited to open days and celebrations. The residents are supported in personalising these open days, previous years have included the residents making handmade cards for all occasions; soaps, rings, calendars and knitted dolls.

The scheme has worked closely with the disabilities employment advisors and have helped find unpaid employment for 6 residents who can gain skills in gardening and basic work shop.

Meal times are relaxed and flexible to suit the resident's schedules. Residents are consulted on the menus and variations of alternative menu options. Residents are encouraged to cook independently and undertake preparing tasks vegetable/food shopping and menu planning.

Anchor House has information available to residents on healthy living this includes a new folder which includes self help documents for staff and residents.

Residents inclusion into main stream education and promoting new learning opportunities is paramount at Anchor House.

Surroundings

Anchor House is an eight bedded home overlooking the sea front. The staff team is experienced in providing discreet and non-intrusive support for these clients, enabling them to remain independent with dignity and autonomy. It has a staff client/ratio of ten clients to two staff, one waking night staff and a sleep-in member of staff on call.

This is supplemented by a tutor who holds 4 sessions per week in the classroom and an extra carer for 8 hours per week to facilitate trips and outings.

The residents tend to be divided in to two groups. Firstly, the residents to whom Living skills are taught, where appropriate, and many of these clients aspire to live in private accommodation, whilst remaining under the umbrella of the Whitby Scheme and receiving ongoing support and guidance. The second group catered for are people whose level of care has changed. Many have led independent lives but though ill health or age, now requires more intensive support from the staff team. We undertake to provide this support in such a way, as to ensure dignity and to allow each client to remain as independent as possible.

We do not cater for people with physical disabilities and have no wheel chair access. We do not provide nursing care.

Service facilities

At the home we arrange open days for residents, families, local businesses, sponsers and local news. We share our success stories and achievements to increase local status, this aims to prevent discrimination for the residents within our care.

We make the most of our position near to the beach, we have BBQ's and fun days, using parks and the local sports fields.

The residents have contributed to 'honest statements' which will assist them to reach their future goals. The person centred documentation encourages one to one discussions between staff and residents encouraging good working relationships for key workers.

Craegmoor philosophy of care and principles are at the heart of the service and are implemented in our person centred care plans.

The residents at the scheme are encouraged to lead the life they choose, risk assessments have been completed for any risks identified through residents choice.

The residents at the scheme have learning disabilities and complex mental health needs. At the Whitby Scheme we recognise that life stress produces feelings of frustration and difficulty managing stressful life events. The transition of moving on to a new environment can cause a significant increase of stress and anxiety. The staff team are experienced and trained to alleviate symptoms through planned strategies and intervention. (Anger management, Anxiety Management and Relaxation Techniques are used on a daily basis). Staff present residents with simple life problems and discuss how these can be resolved to enable individuals to build confidence, self esteem and develop problem solving techniques. Individuals are encouraged to participate in problem solving using simple games and activities to increase their knowledge and awareness on a basic level. The aim of the service offered at the home will be to minimise or eliminate the complex issues that have initially led to the referral.
