The Oaklands is a large detached house that is situated within walking distance of the city centre. We provide assessment and rehabilitation for up to eight people with mental health problems aged between 18 and 65. We also support in the community for those moving on, under the Direct Payment Scheme. Individuals are supported to develop daily living skills and move towards more independent living.

Overview of service

We have eight bedrooms, two of these being on the ground floor so we are able to support those less physically able. There is a friendly, mixed staff team who enjoy working here.

All of the care planning on the unit is person centred which allows people to identify personal goals and needs and to decide how best to meet these. Social workers, families and other members of the multi disciplinary teams are very involved in individual's care.

What it's like to live here

The Oaklands is a rehabilitation unit so therefore there is a well structured routine in place for everyone living here. Activities are many and varied and range from maths groups, going swimming, meals out, voluntary work, playing pool, dance classes and art groups.

As part of an individual's rehabilitation, the service is run by them with the support of the staff. Duties include cooking, cleaning, shopping, personal laundry, decision making and planning. Individuals are also assisted to contact benefit agencies, doctors, dentists, opticians and other agencies which we use to support our daily lives.

Surroundings

Oaklands is situated on a main road close to the city centre and those who use our service make use of a wide range of local facilities. We do have our own vehicle to access the wider community and everyone makes good use of the public transport links which are easily accessible from here.

Service facilities

Oaklands is comfortable, clean and homely. All redecoration is done following consultation with individuals - this applies to communal areas as well as individual bedrooms. All food is bought locally by the individuals living here, and is fresh on a daily basis. This is then prepared by everyone with staff providing support and assistance.

There is space to sit outside - with BBQ's being a common activity during the Summer months - and there is a well maintained pond area built by individuals and staff.
