Kalmia and Mallow specialises in supporting adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, as well as people with Autism and Dementia. We aim to provide a safe and homely environment, where all individuals can make their own choices about the support they receive.

    Overview of Service

At Kalmia and Mallow we pride ourselves in supporting 12 people to develop individual life skills in a friendly environment of 2 bungalows.

Each bungalow supports 6 people and offers different levels of support. Kalmia supports adults with challenging behaviour and Mallow supports people with varied and complex physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

The support offered is dependent on individual need and staff work at each person's own pace, aiming to reach their potential.

Kalmia and Mallow promotes Craegmoor's communication strategy, "Your Voice", which encourages individuals, based on their preferred method of communication, to voice their views about the support they receive. Monthly meetings are held where individuals are able to represent the views and voices of others living at the service.

What it's Like to Live Here

The people that we support are encouraged through their Person Centred Plans to achieve their goals and aspirations. For some people this means attending college to access various courses, including cooking, art and daily living skills. For others it means work placements and other day opportunities in line with their goals.

Within the house we continually and consistently promote the development of social skills, independent living and personal responsibility. This includes daily skills such as shopping, cooking, doing laundry and cleaning, and tasks are dependent upon an individual's ability. The people who live here are very proud of their home as they have so much involvement in creating it.

Everyone is encouraged and supported to help in the kitchen to prepare meals and to help with general housekeeping.

    Surroundings

Kalmia and Mallow is situated in the small market town of Watton, which is on a main bus route into Norwich city centre. Watton boasts a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a sports centre. From Norwich city station there are trains to access most parts of the country and the service is about 45 minutes away from the coast by car or bus.

    Service Facilities

Kalmia and Mallow consists of 2 large bungalows, which have wide doorways and corridors to accommodate people who use a wheelchair and/or have physical disabilities. Kalmia has a specialist bath and a wet room and Mallow has a fully functioning sensory room, which consists of fibre optic sensory lights, a ball pit and many sensory and educational items.

Both bungalows have 2 lounges and people have access to the sensory garden at the front and to the grassed area at the back. There is a vegetable patch, a BBQ area and a memorial garden.

The bungalows are linked via a large corridor, which is used as an activities and arts and crafts room. There are also computers available to use, with support.
