Overview of service

The Waves is a specialised service for people with Autism and complex needs. The Waves has recently undergone a complete refurbishment both internally and externally, and opened in summer 2011.

What it's like to live here

Each service user has a weekly activity plan that has been individualised to suit their needs and interests and is put together with the help of the individual, their family and friends and multi-disciplinary team. This can range from in-house activities art, music therapy, intensive interaction, singing and dancing to activities out in the community such as swimming, the use of soft play/sensory room, shopping and walks. There is the opportunity to be supported to on work placements or college courses if this is something the individual wants to be involved in. The staff at The Waves are in the process of being trained in key word signing and have access to widget symbols to enable the individuals they support to communicate in their preferred method.

Surroundings

The Waves has three large bedrooms with en-suite facilities with the remaining accommodation comprising of a kitchen, living/dining room, utility room, office and guest WC. The service is also well situated for all amenities with the local shops and bus route being within walking distance.

Service facilities

We encourage the people we support to personalise their rooms to their own taste as well as to take an active role in the running of the home and to put forward their own ideas at the service user meetings – Your Voice. The Waves has a rear garden and patio area which is used in summer months for BBQs and ‘Al-Fresco’ dining. The garden is also used by a service user at Waves to ride his Go-Kart and do sensory integration sessions with staff and Occupational Therapist.
