This purpose-built care complex in Tooting, South West London, has been specifically designed to enable older people to live independent, happy and fulfilling lives. Opened in 1991, Ronald Gibson House is surprisingly tranquil, being situated in the extensive grounds of Springfield Hospital, and yet remains accessible and convenient. It comprises a nursing home caring for 40 physically frail older people, a 16 bed wing for mentally frail residents and a 10 place daycare centre.

Ronald Gibson House provides a home where older people can be helped to live as independently as possible and where the emphasis is on quality and enjoyment of life. When necessary the staff offer highly skilled nursing care and are proud to do so in an atmosphere where residents are encouraged to feel they are still in charge of their own lives. The Home is divided into five wings, each room with its own en-suite facilities, which promotes the feeling of family units. The Home''s philosophy is that residents should be able to make decisions for themselves and choose how to spend their time. Many enjoy going out, joining in activities or just spending time with each other. A carer helps to organise activities and maintain links with the local community, and there is a Friends network. Residents are encouraged to continue with previous leisure interests and there are opportunities to be sociable through outings. However, for those who prefer more peace and solitude, their privacy is respected. Led by an experienced and enthusiastic Home Manager, the staff at Ronald Gibson House work as a close team and are committed to the Brendoncare philosophy. They make every effort to provide care which promotes privacy and dignity, and to understand each resident''s needs and preferences. Registered Nurses are always on duty supported by well-trained Care Assistants, and all the staff receive continuous education and development. As part of the team Physiotherapists are employed and exercise classes are a regular feature of daily activities. A local GP supports the Home and visits regularly, however residents can be registered with the doctor of their choice. A chiropodist attends the Home on a regular basis and other services can always be arranged. A Consultant in Gerontology also visits regularly.
