The Social Care News Roundup 9th January 2014

Our Video News Roundup in a Minute and a Half.

News stories that have caught my eye this week commencing 6th of January 2014

The transcript and all links are below the video.

From the BBC – Exporting Grandma to care homes abroad.

A story about a Swiss woman living in a care home in Thailand with other Swiss and German residents at about half the cost of a care home in Switzerland. The woman’s daughter says the quality of care is better than she might expect at home.

It might sound like a drastic step, that’s why you should read the article.

Another from the BBC – Patient data to be collected from GP’s.

The NHS already collect it from hospitals, this step should help them build a complete picture of the nations health – you can of course prevent your data being shared if you so wish.

You will be receiving details in the post this month telling you all you need to know.

A not so festive Christmas story from The Guardian about 18,500 people who were stranded in hospital over the Christmas holidays. They were well enough to go home, but due to social care cuts they could not go home. Andy Burnham looks hoping mad read the article to see why?

Another story from the Guardian

The heading says it all – “Healthcare leaders urge end to ‘relentless’ criticism of the NHS."

And I agree with them…..

Lastly a thought provoking article from “The Conversation” written by Dr Daniel Newman of twitter fame who draws comparisons between a Hollywood B movie called “The Purge” and the shifting attitude towards the poorer members of our society.

That’s all folks, my news roundup in a minute and a half, thanks for watching.
