The Wheelhouse is a small home located in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex within a short distance of the main town centre and seafront and is registered to support four adults, between the ages of 18 – 65 years old, who have a learning difficulty/ Autism/ Challenging Behaviour.

Overview of Service

Our professional and friendly staff team, who are trained on a continuous basis, offer support and choice for young adults with severe learning disabilities, communication difficulties and Autism. We aim to enable everyone living at The Wheelhouse to lead an independent life, wherever possible.

Positive reinforcement and a high staff ratio provide opportunities for individuals to develop their daily living skills, supported by the philosophy of gentle teaching. The service we deliver is based on the belief of individuals' rights and choices.

All individuals are involved in designing their own Person Centred Plan, with staff support. The plans are tailored to suit individual needs and provide the correct level of support required. They also enable all individuals to make their own choices about the support they receive. We encourage and support people to recognise and identify their goals and ambitions and how they would like to go about meeting them.

What It's Like to Live Here

There are many activities to get involved with at The Wheelhouse, both in and out of the service, and everyone helps to choose and plan which activities are available. Some activities include shopping, going out for meals, going to the cinema and attending the local sports centre.

All Service Users are respected as individuals who have individual needs that require an individual care package.  Our mission is to promote independence and honour privacy and dignity.  We strive to provide a totally holistic approach to life where physical, social and psychological wellbeing is upheld and given equal importance through person centred planning.

Our service user’s views and opinions are paramount to their ownership of the care they receive and are sought by alternative communication methods such as Makaton, PECS and through the use of objects of reference – these are always acted upon.

Each service user within the home formulates a daily/weekly planner that encompasses social and educational activities. Some of these activities include: Horse riding at the local RDA school, swimming, Day centres, Cinema, Bowling, Nature walks, Music sessions, Aromatherapy /Sensory sessions and independent living skills inc.shopping.   We aim not only to encourage community participation but also to play an active meaningful role within the community.  The home places an emphasis on ensuring that where there is a reflected need for an advocate this service is facilitated to further adhere to the needs of the individual.
